2 Things my Million Dollar Mouth Taught Me

Today was my last visit in a very long line of recent visits to my dentist.

I am now affectionately calling myself the “Million Dollar Mouth"

 

I hate going to the dentist.

It hurts

and it is expensive.

 

But I love my dentist.

how does that even happen?

 

1) He is really good at what he does.

He covers the basics of being on time, telling me when it is going to hurt, making sure I know what is coming next, ….performing all the basics really, really well.

 

2) He is really kind.

He knows I would rather be anywhere else, spending my hard earned dollars on pretty much anything else. So he is compassionate to the situation. 

He says things like, “oh, this is just beautiful” or “I am so thrilled with how this turned out”.

 

Now I have had a dentist who was funny, I liked him too.

But I think if my current dentist tried to be funny it would be weird.

 

So what did I learn:

1) People like to do business with people who are good. It is important to know your stuff and honor the other person by being on time and keeping your commitments.

 

2) Lead with your Strengths

I liked my funny dentist.

I like my compassionate dentist.

I REALLY like that they are genuine.

It is hard to be funny if you aren’t the “funny guy” and some folks can not pull off the “I’m really concerned about you” for anything.

Yet, they both built a practice around their natural strengths. And even better, they let those gifts become the cornerstone of their business.

AND

they paired it with excellent service: doing all the little things right.

 

So when we look at our own businesses it is a great reminder to:

Do the little things really well

With the addition of the special secret sauce that makes us “us"

This July Stampin’Up! will be hosting the last “Convention” as we have come to know it.

It's time for a little "Refresh"

I have been a Stampin'Up! Demonstrator for 15 years.

When I first started at home workshops were THE thing.

Then it was "Hands On" workshops

Then it was Clubs

Then it was Classes

 

Each year we look for what is the best way to get our products in front of people.

My suggestion to you, if you haven't already, is to transition your clubs to classes.

and here is why:

• a club is limited to it's members
• a club has a "minimum" order requirement which can result in low sales if everyone just does the minimum
• a club gives away the hostess benefits to one of the members
• a club is stressful if you are always looking for something new to share (they have seen it all!)

 

A Stamp Class:

• $20 or free with a $35 purchase (gives you $$ in your pocket and sales)
• Open to everyone, you can encourage guests AND have an event for new customers to attend
• YOU keep the hostess dollars to replenish your supplies (lowering your costs and increasing your profits)
• You can focus on products rather than techniques (we don't make a lot of money selling techniques)
• You can encourage the purchase of the starter kit without worrying about host dollars
• You can offer newbies a free class as a perfect introduction to what you offer

 

A lot of my clients offer this class Open House style from 12-7 on a weekday or Friday night/Saturday morning .

They are able to fit everyone in without too much concern for overcrowding.

 

It is also a great time to have displays of kits, upcoming classes, and product lines to encourage more sign ups and sales.

 

A new catalog is the perfect time to change up how you do things and what you offer

Now might be the perfect time to freshen up your schedule!

Recently I had a chance to share some of my trainings in Minnesota, at a rockin' Stampin'Up! event hosted by leaders in the Minneapolis area.

I was so honored to share my concept of "You + 2" with the demonstrators who attended.

 

The new career plan that rolls out on October 1st, gives all of those with rolling 12 month sales of 1800+ a 25% Instant Income, what a fun perk!

For many of our true hobbyists this can be a stretch.

And what I am hearing from many of them is that they really don't want to be told how to do workshops, clubs or classes.

They didn't join Stampin'Up! to sell product, they joined because they are passionate paper crafters who love the inspiration, discount and camaraderie of being a demonstrator.

 

So how do we make it fun and easy for every demonstrator to earn the 25% Instant Income?

Here are 3 ideas:

1) Stamp with Friends

I like to tease that "no one stamps alone". Rather than think about planning a class or event, or which of your friends might want to stamp, just have everyone bring whatever they like to do: scrapbooking, knitting, card making, etc and spend time together as you each work on your own projects.

Simply by stamping with others they will see the quality of the product, the great colors we offer, and who could resist the Gift Box Punch Board when they see it in action?

 

2) Craft and Vendor Fairs

Our passionate paper crafters love to create! A craft fair is a great reason to spend hours making adorable projects. 

And once at the craft fair it is so much fun to have people ohh and ahh over the hand crafted items along with selling those items to support future purchases.

 

3) Get Involved

There are many organizations out there that could benefit from gathering it's members together to make cards. These cards can either be sold to raise money for the organization or be used by the organization to send out thank you notes, etc

I suggest charging a small fee to each participant ($5ish) or asking for donations to cover supplies. It is a great way to give back to the community and share your passion

 

Our Passionate Paper Crafters and Happy Discount Shoppers make up well over 90% of our demonstrator and team base.

Rather than try to turn them into Business Demonstrators, we need to create a community and culture that truly values their passion and skill.
